People think they are liberated to choose their path. But they are totally in hands of their karma collections their mind forces them through particular circumstances to help them in understanding their true self. If they do not realize the truth of their karmic pattern, they are in agony.
To avoid mind best is to surrender to the Truth which attracts, without any mind interference.
