Homosexuality – Nature’s Perspective
There are scores of people in India today, who have lived many glorious years of their life believing that they are gay. I am passing no judgement on their belief but simply daring to state my views based on Natural Laws and plain spirituality, the science of spirit. Someone may ask what qualifies me to make such statements, and the answer is ‘Truth.’ There are various interpretations of Truth, but I operate keeping in mind the simplest and the most irrefutable one, based on Natural Laws and Nature’s Intelligence.
1. Nature’s Laws are the same for everyone, including itself.
2. Nature knows no good or bad, only perfection and imperfection.
3. Nature’s every act is guided by creation, perfection and destruction only.
4. Nature operates within opposites; it has no percentages – day-night, hot cold, male-female etc etc. Any argument that there are grey areas in Nature like twilight, dawn, dusk, is disowned as those are mere transitory phases of the same.
Supreme intelligence has bestowed upon all creation the power to reproduce and recreate, to see a reflection of oneself in one’s offspring’s. It is a process of inviting a soul to manifest itself on Earth, through your being. How can an act associated with such divine intentions be so impure? How can it be a matter of ‘human convenience’ and pleasure with no thought to the purpose itself? Pleasure itself is not bad, but indulgence in it is….because it clouds the mind, living in it, one craves for more and more. Nature stays in perpetual dhyan – a constant state of awareness - observing, guiding and watching itself so that it stays on the path of Natural Law. There is no room for self-doubt. When does and in which condition does Nature say – should I? Shouldn’t I? This entire debate on homosexuality and every person who indulges in it is constantly plagued with self-doubt…from the moment they discover their homosexual leanings to the time they desire to lead a ‘normal’ family life.
Everything is either perfect or imperfect. There is perfection in imperfection too, but perfection itself is just perfect! If we claim to strive for perfection and then succumb to imperfect thoughts, words and deeds, we are not perfect. A sadhak of perfection cannot indulge in anything imperfect. Human has to aspire for poornta in every way. That is the only way. Saying that ‘no one is perfect’ or ‘I am just human’ and using that as an excuse to justify personal imperfections is being an escapist and weak. Either one aspires for perfection or one doesn’t. And human beings have the capacity to be Supreme – a reflection of Nature. That is Nature’s divine plan. That is why we humans have been blessed with the capacity to aspire for perfection like Nature and not be limited in our growth and understanding like animals. Here, let me add that some gay activists cite the existence of homosexual behaviour in animals as an example of it being natural for humans too!
Our culture is based on Nature worship and trust in Nature’s intelligence. The Human mind cannot fathom Nature’s wisdom, which, can only be experienced by connecting with Nature, much like two friends who start behaving like each other and sometimes reflect each other’s behaviour. This is, as I said before a matter of experience, of anubhuti.
The concept of satyam, shivam sunderam, is the very essence of our culture. One can imagine love between two souls to be truthful, graceful and harmonious. The only truth that one must keep in mind is that since Nature has no duality or self-doubt (since we see no obvious expression of it…Nature never behaves like human beings who are scoured with self-doubt), therefore, form and function is co-related. Nature has blessed so called gay men with a male body, the lesbians with a female body and they need to respect it, and believe in it. Negating it in thought, word or deed is abusing Nature’s directive.
Creation, Perfection and Destruction are the three forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh. Every act of Nature is inspired and directed by these principles. The act of procreation involves creation of a being, its sustenance in the mother’s womb and finally destruction by expelling it from the body. Every aspect is beautiful and perfect. But what can one say about another act that pretends to ape this divine system but horribly falls short. It leaves its precious seed in a place meant for expelling waste, it is a mere matter of adjustment and convenience; it leads to neither creation nor perfection. Self-destruction is the only thing it courts!
The guilt, the emotional baggage and the need for constant self-justification all add to confusion, pain and ego. Ego - a self-image that is a creation of the mind, not a reflection of the true being!
And last but not the least, there are no percentages in Nature – either you are or you are not. Energies are either male, female or balanced, as in the case of ardhnarishwar – someone who can perform both male and female duties, ‘duties’ not acts, because acts would be pretence and therefore untrue. They are balanced, have absolute control of their senses and switch roles with indulgence according to the requirement of time with energy depletion. Eunuchs etc do not have balanced energies, but fall in a category that is true to their form and being, there is no duality. These too are held in high esteem in our culture – they are worshipped as kinnars (kim nar i.e are you a man? in sanskrit) and their blessings sought on every auspicious occasion. Infact, so true are they in accepting their state, that on their last journey they are beaten with shoes, symbolic of the fact that they do not aspire to come back into such a form to lead a wretched life ever! It was a choice that was perhaps never in their hands….
Since male and female energies are guided by hormones that are chemical secretions and lead to – harmony, it would not be incorrect to assume that this state of confusion could be a case of hormonal ill balance, which can be corrected only by a person whose personal energies are perfectly tuned and have the full knowledge of inner unseen anatomy. This was the case of Shikhandi (Draupadi’s brother) who was sent to Guru Dronacharya for the same. There are many references of alternate sexuality in our culture, but never has an avatar (highest evolved specie, epitome of perfection) or any of his/her manifestations been gay! Infact, the Gita, which is used in the courts today for the oath of allegiance to ‘truth,’ considers all such leanings as demoniac or ‘asuric,’ and therefore belonging to a lower level of consciousness.
Maybe, a person who feels this imbalance has been destined to go through greater penance and remorse due to humans heightened sensitivity. Such are the ways of Nature; the toughest exams are given to those who are capable of passing them!
Activists of alternate sexuality always cite references from the Khajuraho temples etc. what they do not know is that the purpose of these representations was completely different. The beautifully chiselled figures are stunning depictions of non-conformist sexual behaviour. There are several levels to the temple but only the lower levels have visual representation of all kinds of sexual deeds. These are flights of fancy and do not represent the society in general of that time, nor do they provide sanction to such acts. They are merely Freudian expressions of all kinds of sexual acts in an attempt to highlight the fact that as one evolves; animal instincts need to be shed to move on to higher and purer planes. People, who were at a lower level of their sadhna and therefore less evolved, carved these representations. They needed to ‘vomit’ their desires and fantasies; while the higher planes were chiselled by more yogic artisans. It is a well-accepted psychological fact that when one expresses one’s desires openly and fearlessly, they are mitigated. The intermediary planes of the temple show deities, while the topmost level of the temple is devoid of any figures, expressing the fact that on higher planes of spirituality, rudimentary sexual energy is channelised and transformed into something more divine and ethereal. This can only be experienced. Hence those who quote from our scriptures and refer to temple carvings should also, either imbibe our culture entirely or leave it alone to those who have absolute faith in it, and not use it as a matter of convenience, to justify their imperfections!
Our culture is scientific as well as extremely sensitive. We not only had the courage to pose questions, but also strived to do penance to find the answers. These can only be revealed to true seekers.
I write this article not to belittle or find faults, but in response to the cry of the soul of so many sensitive but lost humans, that touches me, ever so often …. Please, listen, mother Nature loves all. Life is beautiful; we need to make it more beautiful, imperfection has to go. That is the purpose of human existence on Earth.
